Toronto, Canada
The central theme of Le Pain Quotidien would, of course, be bread. As soon as you walk into this busy, European cafe, you'll smell the scent of fresh breads of all kinds, filled with olives, potato, grains and seeds.
But, you've only just walked in. And it's only the beginning. Find a seat if you can, at one of the many two seater tables and don't forget to read the specials on the way in. There are the daily specials, however the regular menu consists of imaginative omlettes, quiches, soups and salads. But the main attraction on the menu is Le Pain Quotidien's "tartines". Traditionally, in France, a tartine is essentially what we call toast & jam. But, oh, this is so much more.
Le Pain Quotidien has created a menu of about a dozen tartines, some sweet, some salty, with inventive and fun flavours. They'll serve your unique choice, bien sur, on their homemade fresh bread. Imagine Ricotta with Mission Fig, black pepper & Honey served on organic whole wheat bread with diced tomatoes if you can. Believe me, it is as good as it sounds.
For a healthy, mouth watering, reasonably price, and organic - where possible - lunch, I highly recommend stopping in at Le Pain Quotidien...as long as you don't mind speaking over the conversations your neighbours are having. It's a tight squeeze in this cafe/bistro-style restaurant.
